Back to Our Past Returns

Back To Our Past returns to Dublin’s RDS for a third annual run on the weekend of 12-14 October 2012.  BTOP is already established as an event at the heart of Irish genealogy, but it’s also a broader heritage experience.  This year it has even more to offer.  Those familiar with its bustling atmosphere will find it as lively as ever.  Those attending BTOP for the first time will find it exhilarating and enlightening.  They will include three groups of researchers visiting from the USA.

Exhibitors ranging from international genealogical companies to record repositories, heritage magazines and family history societies will be there to question one-on-one.  Two streams of lectures will run throughout the three days, and the Industries Hall of the RDS will be alive with experts, including members of APGI (the Association of Professional Genealogists in Ireland) and Eric Knowles of BBC’s Antiques Roadshow.  Those with more eclectic tastes may care to stroll through the Over 50s Show in the main RDS Hall and into the neighbouring Coin & Stamp Fair.

This year BTOP will feature an expanded programme of lectures, with 40 talks being given over the weekend.  As well as presentations on behalf of Ancestry.com, findmypast.ie / Eneclann, there will be a varied line-up of well known speakers.  These include Else Churchill of the London-based Society of Genealogists and Janis Duffy of TIARA, the very active Irish family history organisation from Boston.  Some of Ireland’s best known genealogists will be lecturing.  Three of them are now familiar faces from Irish television.  Nicola Morris and John Grenham were seen giving advice on the Genealogy Roadshow, while Steven Smyrl appeared in the more recent Dead Money.  All three are accredited members of APGI.

The talks will not be confined to family history themes.  This year there is a broader range of heritage topics.  They include Martello Towers, the Cistercians, the Irish Landmark Trust, the Irish Community Archive Network, history at local level, and the care of books and photographs.

The two strands of lectures run throughout the event, with each presentation commencing on the half hour.  Lecture Area 1 will be on the exhibition floor in the Industries Hall.  Lecture Area 2 will be on the first floor, accessible by stairs and wheelchair lift.  The full lecture programme will be available on the BTOP website www.backtoourpast.com in the first week of September.
